Do you have a good hobby? Is it binge-watching Netflix? Hulu? Everyone loves a good binge session, but it turns out, that doesn’t really count.
According to WebMD, a hobby improves overall well-being, reduces stress, and promotes mental health. Yes, please.
Now that you know you should have one, where do you start? Is candle making a good hobby? Heck ya it is, and here are 7 reasons to give it a try it.
Low on Hobby Funds?
On a budget? Candle making could be the perfect fit for you. As far as hobbies, it can be relatively inexpensive to start. All you need are a few materials, such as wax, wicks, fragrance oils, and containers. The supplies can be found at craft stores, candle supply stores, or online at reasonable prices.
But buying these separately can add up, so the best way to begin is with a candle making kit that includes everything you need to get started. There are many to choose from with different waxes and containers. Do you want to try making some soy wax candles? There’s a kit for that.
It’s an inexpensive way to make some candles and see if you enjoy it. The average price for a kit is around $40.00. You can spend more on a reusable water bottle. I’m looking at you Yeti, and your friend Hydro Flask.
Complicated? Nope.
Worried it’s too complicated? It’s not and you can do it! They’re just a few supplies needed, and if you can measure, melt, mix, and pour, you’ve got this! If you’re starting with a candle making kit (please do), you’ll have all the supplies needed and instructions to follow… easy, right?
However, if you prefer a visual, there’s always YouTube, where there are plenty of candle making tutorials available to help answer any questions you may have.
Of course, if something more formal is for you, check if candle making classes are in your area. You’ll get the in-person instruction that is so helpful to answer any questions you have. This is what I did, and it was a great experience that I recommend.
Your Creative Side is Calling
Have you been missing your creative side? Or not sure if you have one? A candle making hobby might surprise you. There are many fragrances, colors, and containers that you can experiment with to create the candles you want.
And, you get to design the label, which is also where your creativity will shine. The proof will be unique candles that reflect your personal style.
Think of the fun you’ll have flexing your creative side while making candles you love.
Not Much Time? No Problem
Wondering how long this all will take? Once you have your supplies, this hobby does not take up much time. If you’re starting with a candle making kit, most have enough materials to make about 4-6 complete candles.
The process of making the candles (measuring, mixing, and pouring) is not long (maybe an hour) and then you have to let them cure (harden) completely before you can test them. This depends on the wax and can take 1 or 2 days (paraffin wax), and up to 1 week (soy wax).
Bonus: Always Have a Gift to Give
Do you like to give gifts? Or, are you always running out last minute to buy a gift? Another benefit of a candle making hobby is that it allows you to create personalized and unique gifts for your friends and family.
Whether a birthday, special occasion, or holiday, a handmade candle is a thoughtful present that shows you care. Plus, you can customize the scent, color, and design to make it a truly one-of-a-kind gift.
Imagine always being prepared with an amazing handmade gift, no matter the occasion. Who wouldn’t love a candle made just for them?
Sell the Heck Out of Them
So you love your new hobby, now what? Well, candle making can also be profitable if you want to sell your creations.
The rise of the handmade market has created a demand for high-quality, unique candles. There are several options to take your hobby to the next level, such as selling your candles online, at local craft fairs, or specialty stores.
With some planning, you can turn your hobby into a side hustle or a full-time business.
You’ll Feel Good
So you can take a break from binge-watching, and try an easy, affordable, creative hobby you can give as gifts, that doesn’t take too much time and can potentially make you money.
Wow. What are you waiting for??
