What Candle Making Supplies Do You Need?

You’ve thought about making candles and now you want to try it out. At the very least you can give them as gifts, or even start a candle making business. Now what? You need some candle making supplies.

To make beautiful candles, you need the right candle making supplies. Whether you’re a beginner or an experienced candle maker, having the right tools and materials is a must to create high-quality candles. What supplies do you need to start?  Here we go.

Basic candle making supplies

First, you need to have wax. Wax is the primary ingredient in candle making, and there are various types of wax available, including soy wax, beeswax, and paraffin wax. Each type of wax has its unique properties, and you can choose the one that suits your needs and preferences.

You’ll also need wicks, which you light up to create a flame. Wicks come in different sizes and types, and you need to choose the right one based on the size of your candle and the type of wax you’re using.

Second, you need to have a melting pot. A melting pot is a container that you use to melt the wax. You can use a double boiler or a melting pot specifically designed for candle making.

You’ll also need a thermometer to measure the temperature of the wax accurately. Other essential supplies include a scale to measure the ingredients accurately, a stirring utensil, and a mold to shape the candle or a container to pour the wax in, which is the best for a beginner.  I only use containers.

By having these supplies, you’ll be able to create beautiful and fragrant candles that you can enjoy or give as gifs.

understanding candle making supplies

When it comes to making candles, it’s better to understand the basics of the process before buying supplies. Candle making involves melting wax, adding fragrance and color, pouring the wax into a container or mold, to which you have added a wick. Below are some key points to keep in mind:

      • Wax: The type of wax you choose will determine the type of candle you can make. Some popular waxes include soy wax, beeswax, and paraffin wax. Each wax has its own unique characteristics, such as melt point and scent throw.

      • Fragrance: Adding fragrance to your candle can enhance the overall experience. It’s important to use fragrance oils specifically designed for candle making, as other types of oils may not mix well with the wax. Be sure to follow the recommended usage rate for each fragrance oil.  Fragrance can also affect how your candle burns.

      • Color: Adding color to your candle can help set the mood and match the décor of your space. You can use liquid or dye chips to color your wax. Keep in mind that some colors may affect the scent throw of your candle and how it burns.

      • Container or Mold: The type of container (jar or tin) or mold you use will depend on the type of candle you want to make. A container is the best choice for a beginner. This is what I started with and still use. Many candle makers use containers because there are so many to choose from. Start with jars or tins and later if you want to try to make candles with a mold, go for it.

      • Wick: Choosing the right wick is crucial for a successful candle. The size and type of wick you choose will depend on the type of wax and container/mold you are using. A wick that is too small may result in tunneling, while a wick that is too large may result in a candle that burns too quickly. But don’t worry, there are wick charts to help you choose the best one for your candle.

You don’t need much to start making candles. It’s a fun hobby that could turn into something more. Where should you start with your supplies? A candle making kit.

There are many different types of candle making kits available. Many are for beginners, while others are better for those with more experience. Most kits include everything you need to get started, however some require you to purchase additional materials separately.

Decide which kit is best for you by considering your skill level, budget, and personal preferences. Whether you’re looking for a kit that includes natural ingredients, a specific fragrance, or a certain type of wax, there are plenty of options available to help you create the perfect candles for your home.
